Today is Election Day here in the U.S., and for us at Atabey & Co., it’s more than just a day on the calendar. It’s deeply personal. Brittany and I are two Puerto Rican women in our 30s—mothers, wives, and co-owners of a mission-driven company dedicated to amplifying voices that often go unheard. We know firsthand the strength, resilience, and power within our community and our culture, and today, we’re urging you to make a plan to vote.
As Puerto Rican women, we carry the legacy of those who came before us, the fierce women who fought for equality and rights many once thought impossible. And yet, the fight for fair representation, equality, and protection has often been harder and longer for Black and brown women.
Did you know?
1920: White women won the right to vote in the United States with the 19th Amendment.
1935: Puerto Rican women gained the right to vote on our island, but barriers to fair representation remained.
1965: Black women finally gained protection for the right to vote under the Voting Rights Act—a full 45 years after the 19th Amendment.
1968: The Fair Housing Act was passed to stop discriminatory practices in housing against people of color.
1974: Women, for the first time, could apply for credit on their own without a male co-signer—a freedom that empowered women to gain financial independence.
Every milestone took strength and courage from women determined to break through oppressive systems. At Atabey & Co., we proudly serve a community that embodies this courage: Black and brown women, the LGBTQ+ community, and women whose voices are essential yet often marginalized.
Our mission is to amplify voices, particularly those of Black and brown women who are changing the conversation in every sphere—our work centers on fostering an inclusive space where our community can learn, grow, and thrive.
Today, we honor our legacy by standing strong in the face of barriers and by empowering others to keep moving this country forward. Every single vote matters in that effort.
So today, let’s continue the work of those who came before us. Make a plan to vote, and let your voice be heard.
If you need help finding your polling place or making a voting plan, check out Vote.org for resources. Let’s get out there and make our voices count!
Thank you for being part of this community and for standing with us. Together, we’re honoring our past, supporting each other in the present, and paving the way for future generations. 💪🏽
With Strength and Solidarity,
Sasha & Brittany, Co-Owners of Atabey & Co.
Thank you Sasha for your wonderful pro-democracy and hooray it's election day post. I am 68 and clearly remember fighting for women's rights and abortion rights in the early 70s. It's really hard to believe I'm fighting for those same rights again, 50 years later! It was an honor and privilege to vote for Kamala Harris in this election - because WE ARE NOT GOING BACK! Truly grateful for all you do to amplify marginalized voices. #LFG
