Independent voices matter now more than ever. With Trump’s administration set to return, there’s no sugarcoating the immense damage it’s poised to do—especially to women, Black and brown communities, LGBTQ+ individuals, and anyone standing against Christian nationalism and white supremacy. Let’s be clear: we do not stand behind any of that.
As platforms like Meta and The Washington Post bow to pressure and eliminate fact-checking, the need for independent journalism becomes even more urgent. Our democracy and truth itself depend on amplifying voices that hold power accountable, challenge oppressive systems, and tell stories mainstream media might overlook.
That’s why the Institute for Independent Journalists’ 2025 Live Freelance Conference is such a critical space for learning and action. Join February 27-28 for two days of immersive, live, online sessions designed to help freelancers strengthen their craft and sustain their work in a political climate that desperately needs bold, independent voices.
Here’s what’s on the agenda:
Day 1 kicks off with an inspiring keynote by Celeste Headlee, sharing her experiences navigating mainstream media (NPR, PBS, WNYC) and working independently.
Learn directly from editors at Bloomberg, The New York Times, The Washington Post, and more about what they want in a pitch.
Explore strategies for funding your journalism, using AI to your advantage, podcasting, boosting your income, and more—all in 12 interactive, info-packed sessions.
It’s time to stand together, stronger than ever.
