Friday Newsflow: The Myth of Overnight Success in Podcasting
You’ve probably seen the headlines:
"How I launched my podcast and hit 10,000 downloads in a week!"
"How we went viral with no budget!"
And while I love a good success story… we need to talk about the other side of the narrative.
The one that says: “I’ve been podcasting for two years and just now feel like I’m gaining traction.”
Or: “I’m proud of my slow, steady growth—even if it’s not sexy.”
What’s Happening
This week, we’re pushing back on the myth of overnight success.
Because for most of us—especially indie, BIPOC, mission-driven podcasters—success doesn’t happen fast.
It happens through:
🎙️ Showing up consistently.
📣 Learning from every release.
🤝 Building trust with our audience.
💡 Getting better with each season.
And none of that gets headlines.
Why It Matters
The myth of overnight success is damaging because it creates unnecessary pressure—and often causes people to quit too soon.
We start comparing our early stages to someone else’s highlight reel.
We start believing that if it hasn’t happened yet, it won’t.
But podcasting is a long game.
And the shows that last are usually the ones that grew quietly, intentionally, and with deep purpose.
So if you’ve been building slowly—you’re doing it right.
Your Move
This week, pause and:
✅ Write down three things you’re proud of from your podcast journey—big or small
✅ Revisit your early episodes and notice how much you’ve grown
✅ Share your “non-overnight” story with your audience—they’ll love the honesty
✅ Let go of the imaginary timeline and lean into your pace
There is no rush. Only rhythm.
Bottom Line
The overnight success story might go viral.
But the slow burn? That’s what creates real impact.
You don’t have to explode. You just have to endure.
💬 What’s one win or milestone you’re proud of—even if it took you a while to get there?
Where’s the Episode Round-Up?
Since I’m still in Ghana this week, I’m unable to update the usual episode links—but our shows are still dropping new episodes and sharing stories worth listening to.
Browse the Atabey & Co. podcast network and share a favorite episode this week. Your shoutout could help someone else discover their new go-to show.
