Friday Newsflow: Breaking Barriers at Podcast Conferences
Let’s talk about something that’s been on my mind: podcast conferences. Traditionally, these spaces have been overwhelmingly white and male. But that’s exactly why we need to show up and make our presence known.
Podcast conferences aren’t just about learning new tricks—they’re where opportunities happen. These events bring podcasters together to connect, collaborate, and grow their shows in ways that just don’t happen online.
Podnews recently highlighted why podcast conferences matter, and it’s not just about the sessions—it’s about the people you meet. Steve Stewart shared how casual encounters at events led to collaborations, business deals, and long-term friendships. The takeaway? Conferences aren’t just an expense—they’re an investment.
And yet… who gets these opportunities?
While we have incredible spaces like the Afros & Audio Podcast Festival (coming this October in Baltimore), most major podcasting events are still overwhelmingly white. That’s exactly why we have to show up.
I’m doing my part by speaking at three upcoming conferences:
📍 Moms Behind the Mic Virtual Summit – March 24-27
📍 Podcast Evolutions – March 31 - April 3, Chicago, IL
📍 Podcasting Moms Conference – April 7, Nashville, TN
I’ll be bringing the Black & brown podcasting perspective to these stages because our voices belong in these rooms.
Why This Matters
This isn’t just about showing up—it’s about making sure our stories, businesses, and perspectives aren’t left out of the bigger podcasting industry conversations.
The more we’re present at these events, the more doors open—for funding, partnerships, and growth.
The industry needs to see and hear from Black and brown podcasters—not just on diversity panels, but on business, content strategy, and marketing stages too.
When we network with intention, we build connections that help elevate our platforms and each other.
Your Move
Want to make an impact? Here’s how:
✅ Get in the Room. If you can attend a podcast conference this year, do it—whether it’s a big industry event or something more niche, like Podcasting Moms or Afros & Audio.
✅ Make Networking a Priority. Conferences are where partnerships and opportunities happen. Have your pitch ready, connect with other podcasters, and don’t be afraid to introduce yourself.
✅ Advocate for Yourself & Others. If you’re a speaker, panelist, or attendee, make sure diversity is part of the conversation. Ask questions that challenge the status quo.
✅ Support Black & Brown Creators. If you see a Black or brown speaker on a panel, show up for them. Amplify their message. Make sure their expertise is recognized and valued.
Bottom Line:
The podcast industry won’t change unless we change it. We can’t wait for big conferences to suddenly realize we belong—we have to take up space, claim our seats at the table, and support each other.

In the third powerful installment of Afrocentric.'s Black History Month Series, host Morgan dives deep into the critical intersections of Black economics, colonization, and resistance. Joined by economist Ben Parker, Morgan unpacks how Black people have created thriving financial institutions, businesses, and communities despite being systematically excluded from white-dominated systems. The conversation highlights pivotal moments in Black economic history, such as the wealth of Mansa Musa’s empire and the rise and destruction of Black Wall Street. These stories illuminate a legacy of resilience that continues to inspire resistance today.

She discusses strategies for identifying and challenging these limiting beliefs, such as reframing negative thoughts, cultivating a growth mindset, and practicing self-compassion and also explores the importance of self-awareness and how to connect with your inner wisdom to overcome these mental barriers and unlock your true potential.
