It’s a holiday week here in the States, so it’s been pretty slow. We lit some fireworks in the driveway last night but pretty much spent the rest of the day relaxing. The news doesn’t stop though, so let’s get into what happened in podcasting this week.

A 2017 article by The Atlantic titled “Podcasting is the new Talk-Radio” suggested that podcasting might eclipse traditional radio. Edison Research's Share of Ear® data shows that AM/FM radio’s share of spoken word audio has dropped to 43%, while podcasts have risen to 36%. The advantage for AM/FM is coming entirely from those age 65 and older. Among listeners aged 13-64, podcasts have already surpassed AM/FM, 41% to 39%.
Spanish-language podcast platform Podium, operated by Prisa, has unexpectedly removed several podcasts without clear explanation. “We are trying to clarify the situation,” says comedy podcast Aquí hay dragones; El Descampo says “there are problems that I hope will be resolved soon”, while Nuria Pérez from Gabinete de Curiosidades says that her podcast “has disappeared from all platforms, and that’s all I can say without crying”. Many podcasts on Podium were available freely on open RSS but moved to the platform as exclusives to monetize.
In general podcast stats news - Podcast production remains high, with a new episode released every 0.8 seconds last month, though the number of active podcasts fell by 10,000 to 332,511.
Libsyn Ads reports that June 2024's average podcast ad rates were $21.90 per CPM, slightly up from May but down from the previous year. Technology podcasts have the highest rates; fiction genres are considered more accessible.
Spotify now hosts over 250,000 video podcasts, with the number of video content creators growing by nearly 70% over the past year.
