Celebrating Our Heritage + The Impact of Atabey & Co. in Podcasting
Happy Hispanic Heritage Month! This is a time to honor the rich histories, cultures, and contributions of Hispanic and Latinx communities. I take immense pride in my Puerto Rican culture. It defines who I am at my core and is infused in every facet of my life. I have Puerto Rican art in my home, cook Puerto Rican food, celebrate Puerto Rican traditions, and even have Puerto Rican tattoos! I make it a personal mission to celebrate Latine people and culture often.
At Atabey & Co., this celebration is deeply personal—not just because of our roots, but because our very name is a tribute to our heritage and the power of women.
The Meaning Behind Atabey & Co.
Atabey & Co. isn’t just a name—it’s a tribute to our roots and a symbol of the strength, creativity, and resilience of women, particularly women of color. Atabey is inspired by the Taíno goddess of fertility, creation, and water, revered by the indigenous people of Puerto Rico and the Caribbean. She is often seen as the mother of all things, embodying strength and the nurturing power that brings life and sustains communities—qualities that resonate with our mission to amplify the voices of women, particularly women of color.
For us, Atabey embodies the spirit of creation and resilience, reflecting our commitment to building platforms where marginalized voices can thrive. In an industry that often overlooks the stories and contributions of Black and brown women, we carry Atabey’s legacy by creating spaces where our voices can be heard loud and clear.
Why Our Work Matters in the Podcasting Industry
The podcasting industry is experiencing explosive growth, with the global market projected to reach $130.6 billion by 2030, growing at an annual rate of 27.6%. Despite this growth, women of color are still underrepresented, and the stories that reflect our communities are often missing from the mainstream narrative.
At Atabey & Co., we aim to change that. By supporting women of color podcasters through production, network, and community, we are not just filling a gap—we are reshaping the industry. Studies show that 43% of Latino Americans now listen to podcasts monthly, a 19% increase since 2020, demonstrating a growing audience eager for diverse perspectives.
Our work is not just about producing podcasts; it’s about creating opportunities for connection, empowerment, and change. By amplifying underrepresented voices, we are helping to drive a more inclusive and representative podcasting landscape.
