The iOS 17.4 update has arrived, introducing the feature of transcripts for Apple Podcasts. All new podcast episodes uploaded will accompany AI-generated transcripts shortly after their release. The system is also set to retroactively transcribe existing podcast backlogs. These transcripts can be accessed directly from the Apple Podcasts’ Now Playing screen, featuring a handy search tool for finding specific keywords within the transcript. An interesting aspect of this transcription feature is its approach to dynamically-inserted ads. Although the ads themselves are not transcribed, the system reserves space for them within the transcript, ensuring the episode's text remains synchronized with its audio content.
For podcasters seeking higher accuracy or preferring manually created transcripts, you can replace the AI-generated ones with your own. This update marks a significant step towards improving accessibility in podcasting.
In legal news, indie podcaster Rhondalynn Korolak triumphed in a trademark dispute against Canna Campbell, who was found to have used the same name for her podcast, "Financial Foreplay." The court has ordered Campbell to cover AUD$114,000 (US $75,000) in legal costs.
After negotiations, Spotify Studios and The Ringer unions have reached preliminary agreements with Spotify's management, securing wage increases and unprecedented protections against the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in their workplaces.
Buzzsprout has launched a new app for iPhone users, allowing its customers to manage their podcasts on the go. This app includes features from ad management to editing episode descriptions and is available for free in the App Store. An Android version is expected to be released soon.
Controversy has arisen at YouTube Music, where approximately 50 staff members attempting to unionize were let go during a city council meeting in Austin they attended seeking support. Google insists these were contractors whose contracts had ended, recommending they negotiate with their direct employer. However, the National Labor Relations Board has recognized the workers as jointly employed by Cognizant and Google, with the Alphabet Workers Union arguing Google's actions violate labor laws.
