I’ve been nurturing a running injury all week so I feel like I’m running a little behind today. This week has been a relatively quiet one but it looks like some bigger things are stirring in the podcasting world. Let’s dive into what happened this week.
Platform and Content Strategy Updates
Despite speculation that Spotify had pulled back on big spending, the company is making seven-figure offers to encourage video-oriented creators to distribute their shows on Spotify alongside YouTube, according to Ashley Carman of Bloomberg. Notably, when videos are uploaded to Spotify, the platform extracts audio from the video file rather than the RSS feed, bypassing dynamically inserted ads.
The BBC is expanding its podcast windowing strategy by making more episodes available exclusively behind a registration wall on the BBC Sounds app for a limited time—usually one week or 28 days—before releasing them on open RSS. The BBC reports a successful 18-month trial with 218,000 listeners using BBC Sounds, representing 4.3% of the total audience. However, the majority of listeners still prefer open RSS.
Audience Insights and Demographics
New data from Morning Consult, based on surveys of 68,000 respondents, shows that weekly podcast listeners are more likely than the general U.S. population to earn at least $100,000 annually, hold advanced degrees, and occupy high-ranking job titles like CEO or director. Weekly listeners are also heavy spenders, with 72% shopping on mobile apps weekly, compared to 57% of the general population.
Product and Pricing Changes
Buzzsprout has rolled out redesigned podcast websites, offering podcasters a professional look without the hassle. New features include contributor bios for guests and hosts, fan mail messages, recommended podcasts, and more. The Podnews Weekly Review is both hosted and sponsored by Buzzsprout.
Customers of the live streaming and recording tool StreamYard may be reconsidering their subscriptions after an 80% price increase. Monthly fees have jumped from $25 to $44.99, with the new rates automatically applying to existing subscribers next month. StreamYard was acquired by Bending Spoons, who have a history of steep price increases, and the company’s original co-founders left four months ago. Attempts to buy back StreamYard were unsuccessful.
Industry Funding and Updates
LAist, a radio station and podcast producer in Los Angeles, has been awarded a $2.4 million grant as part of a $15 million funding initiative by the LA Local News Initiative to support local journalism.
iOS 18 is set to release next week, bringing new features to Apple Podcasts, including improved scrubbing with chapter points and titles visible on the playback bar. Think about adding chapters to your shows using tools like Forecast or Hindenburg to enhance listener experience.
