BHM Day 17 - "The Grown Girl Divorce"
Education & empowerment for Black women going through divorce
The Grown Girl Divorce is not your typical discussion about divorce. This podcast dives deep into the unique challenges Black women face when navigating divorce. It's about much more than the legal battles:
Maneuvering through the legal system with the added layer of being a Black woman,
Challenging the misconceptions surrounding Black families and their financial matters,
Tackling the cultural taboos and societal judgments on divorce,
Empowering Black children to grow up with confidence and pride in their identity,
Offering a shoulder to the community while protecting our private lives,
Keeping our mental health a priority amidst the upheaval.
This podcast recognizes that for Black women, divorce is a test of resilience that goes beyond the courtroom. The Grown Girl Divorce is a beacon of education, empowerment, and support. It's here to remind you of your strength and essence, which can easily be overshadowed by the process of divorce.
Meet Kimberly Cook, Host of “The Grown Girl Divorce” and WOC Podcasters member
Kimberly Cook is a seasoned divorce attorney and mediator with a rich career dedicated to guiding individuals and families through the complexities of divorce. With a clientele that spans various races, ethnicities, religions, educational backgrounds, political beliefs, and socioeconomic statuses, Kimberly has honed her expertise in the multifaceted nature of separation and divorce. However, it's her work with Black women that has highlighted a profound insight: for them, divorce transcends the legal framework and delves into deeper issues influenced by culture, community, and societal expectations. Kimberly has observed that the prevailing "divorce narrative" often fails to represent Black women accurately, leaving them stereotyped, stigmatized, or silenced.
Recognizing that Black women deserve a more supportive and understanding approach to divorce, Kimberly has been the go-to source of wisdom, empathy, and sometimes tough love for her friends navigating this challenging journey. This realization led her to a powerful conclusion: navigating a divorce requires a supportive community, yet not everyone has access to a sister or Soror who is a Black woman divorce attorney.
Motivated by the need to fill this gap, Kimberly founded Grown Girl Divorce. This initiative aims to educate and empower Black women undergoing divorce, offering them the resources, support, and reminders of their strength and resilience. Through Grown Girl Divorce, Kimberly extends her personal mission to ensure that Black women have the knowledge and empowerment they need to navigate divorce with dignity and confidence.

Why did Kimberly start the show?
My girlfriends going through divorce struggled to find resources or support that was uniquely tailored to the divorce experience for Black women. I started the podcast with the mission to create a space of relatability where Black women could feel seen, heard, understood, and supported through their unique divorce experience.
